The surroundings of San Martino di Castrozza

San Martino di Castrozza is embedded in a green meadow basin, surrounded by the Natural Park of Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino. From the village you can admire numerous peaks of the Dolomites: the Pale di San Martino Group with the Cimon della Pala, the Vezzana (visible from the area of Passo Rolle or from the magnificent amphitheater of the Pale di San Martino), the Rosetta, the Sass Maor, the Cima Val di Roda, the Cima della Madonna and on the other side the softer massif of Cavallazza and the porphyry peaks of Colbricon and the small Colbricon. The Feltrine Dolomites are also clearly visible from the village, with the impressive pyramidal shape of Monte Pavione.

San Martino di Castrozza (1,487 a.s.l.) is one of the five areas belonging to the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza and is located in the upper valley of the Cismon stream, in eastern Trentino.

Natural Park Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino

The area of the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park is located in the eastern part of Trentino, at an altitude ranging from just under 1,100 a.s.l. to a maximum of 3,200 a.s.l. Bordered to the north by Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa, to the south by Primiero, to the west by Valle del Vanoi, the park extends around the water catchment areas of the Cismon, Vanoi and Travignolo torrents. To the east it includes the Trentino side of the Dolomite Group of the Pale di San Martino. Towards west there are the mountainsides of the Lagorai mountain range. To the north there is the Paneveggio forest, characterized by the mountainsides of Lagorai and by the Cima Bocche Group, which crosses the valley of the Travignolo torrent and is one of the most beautiful forests in the Alps.
The park area is divided into three different protection zones, depending on the existing environmental values and the importance of human influences:

  • integral protection zone (39,82%): areas with elevated protection, the environment is characterized by a high naturality; research and monitoring activities as well as hiking on marked trails and limited grazing are allowed.
  • guided protection zone (49,75%): areas in which the natural conditions as well as the landscape design are preserved, also through traditional activities (grazing, mowing, forestry). The aim is to equalize human intervention with the need for conservation.
  • controlled protection zone (10,43%): areas that are more characterized by human intervention (ski slopes and lifts, residential and tourist settlements) and where the original natural values can be altered. The aim is to redesign existing works and to preserve remaining areas of high naturalness.
